GMR Smart Electricity Distribution Pvt Ltd (GSEDPL) has got contract of smart meter project of Rs 5123.37 crore in Uttar Pradesh. GSEDPL is a subsidiary company of GMR Power and Urban Infra Limited. The LOA was awarded to GSEDPL following an e-tender process conducted by UP Discom.
This contract has been awarded to the company for installation, integration and maintenance of smart meters in Purvanchal region including Varanasi, Azamgarh, Prayagraj and Mirzapur of Uttar Pradesh. GSEDPL will be responsible for installing 50.17 lakh smart meters in these areas.
The company said that out of Rs 5123.37 crore, about Rs 2,386.72 crore is for Prayagraj and Mirzapur zones and about Rs 2,736.65 crore is for Varanasi and Azamgarh zones. Under the contract, this project has to be completed within 27 months, followed by an operational phase of 93 months.
After the news of getting the smart meter project, a 20 percent jump was seen in the company’s shares. GMR Power & Urban Infra, a subsidiary of GMR Enterprises Private Limited, specializes in the areas of energy, urban infrastructure and transportation.
What is Smart Meter?
A smart meter is an electronic device that calculate detailed information on consumption of current, electric energy, power and voltage levels. Smart meter helps to reduce electricity bills, to improve performance status of the electricity grid and to reduce electricity theft.
Types of Smart Meters
A smart meter is available in two configurations depending on energy requirement.
- Three-phase electric meter: Customers or organisations (Industrial and commercial enterprises) that use high amounts of Electricity use a three-phase connection.
- Single-phase electric meter: Electricity requirement at homes are low, that’s why homeowners require a single-phase smart meter.
Smart Meter National Programme
Under the Smart Meter National Programme, Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) company is working to replace 25 crore conventional meters with smart meters across India. As per their official website smnp.eeslindia.org, total 1579052 smart meters have been installed across India.
